1988-1991 Honda CRX. I've owned a number of them over the years and they have been very reliable, and depending on the model, get between 35 and 50 MPG. The rear area is big enough to haul a spare motor and transmission in (did this a few times). And the car comfortably fits both taller (6' 3") and shorter (4' 11") people easily. Because the wheels are 13" or 14", tires are cheap to replace and last a good amount of time because of the car being light weight. They are also one of the most fun FWD cars to drive.

Honda and Toyota have the market for MPG and maintenance, style is a big judgment call. usefulness depends on what your going to be doing with it, Ride to work get a civic, tow a boat get a Tundra. But every consumer rating group rates the Honda's and Toyota's very high.
