I have really dark brown hair, and I'm going for a brownish-red. Kind of like that chick from Will & Grace. lol Am I going to have to bleach my hair first for it to look right, or should I go a few shades lighter so it will show up on my dark hair the way I want it to, or what? I have no idea, I've never gone red before.

If you use a blonde color...you might get orange.

Personally, I have brownish-black hair, and I've had good success with a very light strawberry blonde tone and also, hair colors that promise to color even the darkest tones red. They're a lot better than they used to be.

Like, Garnier 100% color, Feria, stuff like that.

But call the number on one of those boxes for the ? line--they should be able to help you out.

It would be best if you went to a salon and let them do it. I went from dark brown to blonde and now I'm red, but I wouldn't attempt to color my hair at home. My hairdresser took a few strands of my hair and tried different colors on them to see which one worked the best for my hair then she chose the one that worked the best.

You might have to lighten it first, depending on the color you are right now...I would NOT recommend doing it yourself...Red is VERY difficult to maintain, so be prepared...fading is very common...you definitely want to use salon quality products...Redken has a great line... "Color Extend"...it is great for redheads in maintaining the desired color...
Hope it works out for you!!!

I would say go into a walmart or cvs and look at the boxes of hair color and they do a little color guide of your hair color and what your hair color will be after you use the dye.. just go look around and see what color you want to go with

Have it done professionally- it's a pitiful sight to see the cheap out-of-the-box kind of red.
