Beagles are so adorable, and the puppies are to die for! Sooo cute!
They make wonderful family pets. Try a beagle rescue first. http://www.sosbeagles.org/map/
Just click on your state to find a beagle rescue.
With their long ears, they may have ear issues. Be sure they are kept clean and dry by using the proper ear cleaner.
Beagles (boys) are the number one dog to be hit by a car. The reason? They are such great smellers.A 'normal' dog can smell a female in heat up to 5 miles away. If a beagles smell is twice as good as the average dog, imagine how far away he can smell a female in heat!
A lot of beagles come from BYB and you may have difficulty training one. They can also have joint problems and skin/allergy problems. Overbreeding is a huge problem within this breed. Feeding the dog a high quality dog food will help.

For a 7 yr old boy, I think a beagle is a great choice. They are not so small that they are fragile, yet not so large they can't be handled. Their coat is easy to maintain. With help, your brother can learn to wash and brush the dog, clean the ears and even trim the nails.
Remember, whatever your brother gets, the dog needs to be altered if it isn't already. Good luck.

A beagle is one of the toughest breeds to raise. They need to have one on one training and you must be consistent in practicing this training with your dog regularly. Also, a beagle needs a very brisk at least 45 minute long walk every single day because they have so much energy. Beagles also have separation anxiety and do not do well in a home where they are left alone for any more than 3 or 4 hours in a day. Beagles are also notorious for being garbage raiders!! They will knock over that garbage can when nobody is looking and eat everything in sight, which usually presents itself with diarrhea and vomiting! If a beagle does not get the daily walks they need they very easily will put on weight and become very fat! And a beagle can never be allowed to roam about off leash as they are scent hounds and they catch the scent of ANYTHING and they will be gone, no matter how well trained. Many beagles are surrendered to the pound because they are so needy and overly energetic. And do not forget that a beagle doesn't just bark like a regular dog...they BAY very loudly and they do it any chance they get, and many people find it very annoying. Beagles are very misleading because they are just the right size and so darn cute...but they are a handful!

I have two beagles, a male and a female. Both are fantastic house pets. They are great with kids, and my cat just loves both of them. The most important piece of advice I can give to a new beagle owner is this . . . beagles are pack animals. You need to establish yourself as their pack leader. Now here's the weird thing about beagles being a part of a "pack". By instinct, beagles will show deference to their pack leader by grooming them. Since I am the pack leader, I get "groomed" whether I want to or not. For example, I am an extremely heavy sleeper. I also shave my head. I can't tell you how many times I have woken up in the middle of the night with my entire head covered in dog spit. I'm talking every inch of skin is covered, including behind the ears and inside the ears. It's rather disgusting, but in the end it's just the beagle paying his respect.

Beagles are great dogs but require a lot of exercises! They are bred for hunting and can go for long periods of time tracking game...so if you don't have time to exercise and walk this pup 2 X's a day at least, pick a different breed. They Beagle also has a very distinctive bark, if you live in a close neighborhood you need to consider the neighbors ability to tolerate the barking as well.

Beagles are great family dogs and good with kids. They bay quite loudly and don't like to come on command. Other than that, they are great pets. They do have tons of energy and can get pretty loud when excited. When they howl, they sound like a monster dog, even when they are tiny. Good for faking out bad dudes. I think the ultimate family dog is a lab, but I could get a beagle and not be disappointed.

Beagles are a fun, easy going breed.
Sometimes not the brightest bulb on the lamp but they mean well.
Some are timid and quiet, others howl at everything and get into trouble like your typical hound dog.

Instead of getting a puppy, why not check out the local shelters or Beagle rescues in the area.

I have a beagle who is 5 years old now and a great addition to our family. I must warn you that on the tree of intelligence they have definitely fallen and hit their head. They are not very smart and difficult to train, especially house breaking them. I would probably go with a dog like a golden retriever or a lab for a first dog because all hounds are usually like this. Don't think that I would trade my dog (ROCK) for anything. I got him for my 15th birthday present and it is still the best present I ever got.

I have one and they are great little dogs. Yes it is true they will sniff their way right out of your yard, so make sure wherever it's kept is secure. Beagles are escape artist, at 5months old mine can climb chain link fences. Also as someone already said beagles need to be walked everyday and more than once. Beagles can easily get over weight. Lastly Beagles are attention whores. So be ready for hours of belly rubbing. Good luck!

Can be great dogs to own, but remember their original breed function was as a hunting dog. They are scent hounds, and will try to "track" constantly (READ: will run away after a scent if given half a chance). Beagles also "bay" and howl more than bark. If you're looking for a quiet dog, this is probably not your best bet. Easy maintenance for the grooming portion of it, but are prone to bone/joint issues as well as ear issues.
