To prepare to do twice as much work in college or university.

Because, Cookie, this is the time when you are building your knowledge foundation for the rest of your life, not unlike building a house. You have to start with a solid foundation of general knowledge and then build on it during college/university or just life. Your parents have jobs to support the family. This is your job at this age - to become educated.
