Neurontin is good medication for shingles but it is somewhat difficult to find the right dose. It is also a medication you need to take daily. Another (perhaps better) alternativie medication is lyrica. It is easier to titrate and works better. Also shingles are responsive to certain kinds of nerve blocks. You may want to ask for a referral to an interventional pain management specialist who can help you.
Good luck.

OUCH! First of all, you may not have been given a significant dose of Neurontin.Secondly,is there something topical that they are giving you?My suggestion is to go to an acupuncturist and see if that doesn't relieve your pain somewhat. No pain medicine is going to be good for you unless you are knocked out and I am certain that at 16, not only do you not want to be knocked out but you don't want to become addicted to percocets or any other opiate! Try to research on line some holistic treatments.Like type in natural cure for shingles...something like that. Also go to www.webmd I think that it is a shame that you are suffering so, but you need to step out of the box and help yourself find the right combination of things!

SHINGLES ARE VERY PAINFUL!
*** do a yahoo search for shingles, there is a new medication for the stabbing nerve pain*** i tried to copy the site, put it won't let me! there is help and hope!**************
Usually they give you cortizone creme to calm the pain.
HERPES MEDICINE orally or the zorvorax creme (spelling??) helps. but when you take it within the first 2 days of shingles.
Go to your Doctor or CALL UR DOCTOR!
Ask for a sleep medication like www.ambein.com
keep bugging the Doctor until you get satisfactory help!
Pain sucks! you feel like u r going crazy.
DO BE PERSISTANT, AND KEEP BUGGING YOU DOCTOR
Shingles are a virus realted to Chicken Pox.
Which are related to Herpes.
So any perscription medication for Herpes the creme will relieve the burning itching pain.
It's nerve pain, and it's hard for a pain medicine to stop nerve pain. God help you!
I wish you the very best.
Have you seen a Pain managment doctor?
they have a pain patch!! My mom was on it, and it really helped her.
Also tell your doctor to put in writing on your medical chart that you are requesting ________ for your pain. they will write the perscription, no doctor is gonna put in your chart that you requested sleep aids or pain meds for chronic pain and denied you.
Be assertive w/o being agressive!
Be a pest and get what you want and need for help.
Emergency rooms are considered being under a doctor's care.
sounds like you have an immune problem
Tell doctor you request to see an IMMUOLOGIST--someone who specializes in Pain and Shingle disorders.
good luck!
hang in there, this too shall pass.
get some over the counter cortizone and rub it on the shingles.
where are they located? face? your toso or trunk near you tummy?
use powder if they are not oozing to like gold bond creme or powder.
those are just ideas
ZOVIRAX (acyclovir) creme saved my mom!
Zovirax is the correct spelling. \
She had to take 400 mg of Acyclovir 6 times a day, and it cured her shingles, and remained on a low dose to stop reoccurance out breaks.

The two suggestions I have I can make no claims to because this is one I have not lived through.
The first deals with pain and referred pain due to muscles (the knots in them) The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
The second is a logic jump. If shingles are a migration (like a new strain of the flu) caused by chicken pox (which is what I was told), then antitoxins might help get it out of your system.

Call your Doctor, Call your Pharmacist, also most definitely check out webmd!!
I am sorry to hear that you have not found relief, as far as being knocked out by the narcotics, well that is where the addiction comes in for so many people it does not knock them out, it gives them a euphoric feeling, perks them up, I know this for a fact!!
As far as Neurontin, please be careful, I have a friend, an amputee, and she too was prescribed Neurontin, for her phantom pains, she said that the Neurontin when she came off of them made her phantom pains worse!! Neurontin originally from what little I know about it, it was originally for epileptics!! I believe to help control seizures!! How about a Beta-Blocker? or an anti-depressant, or maybe a tranquilizer since stress seems to aggravate your symptoms?!! Good Luck!!

First-stressing out is making your shingles worse. I'm not kidding but try to meditate.
