It depends on the state and locality you live. Some states are 18 for a long gun, 21 for a handgun. Indiana and Colorado are 18 for either. New Mexico is 19 for handgun, possibly some other states are less than 21 for handgun as well.

Most states 18 for long guns(rifle, shotgun) and 21 for handguns. Black powder fire arms do not fall under this. Some states require you to be 18 to buy ammo that is typically chambered in handguns.
elderadod; I don't know were you got your info. But the last time i checked 44-40 and 45 Colts were cartridge fire arms. Not cap and ball.

18 yrs old for rifle and shotgun and 21 for a pistol or revolver. One that you can load a shell into. You can buy a black powder pistol at 18 with no paper work. You know, the guns of the old west 44 40's and 45 long colt and 41 cal that are loaded with powder in the cylinder and a firing cap to ignite the charge with a round ball for a bullit

I believe that there is a federal requirement to be 18 to purchase a long gun and 21 for a handgun. Some states will also have a state requirement to be 21 to purchase a long gun.
Good luck
