I am an 25 yr old American male and I'm really interested into finishing my studies in your country. Just got out of the Army so I meet alot of you guys and gals while in. Well I narrowed my Uni search done to three and was hoping you guys could help me choose between the cities. ADELAIDE, CANBERRA, HOBART or maybe PERTH(I have it last just cause of the distance to anything else.) If you've been to or live in any of these, please give me your opinion. I am a laid back person like the outdoors not to big on the water. Thanks for the help if ya need anything else send me an email, if you convince me of somewhere drinks are on me.

Two choices mate. Perth Uni and Adelaide. Now it depends what you want to study. Both universities are top of the tree. With Adelaide being the main chair in Engineering, Music and the Arts, Law and Medicine
Perth is mainly science and medical research.
Sydney is a great place if you can afford to live there everything is 5 times the price of anywhere else.
Canberra is boring and bloody devoid of any City it is all satelites and the pits to get anywhere
Tasmania, you have to have 2 heads to live there They are all inbred hicks!

Both the cities are of Perth and Adelaide are good i lived in Perth many years and love the place . It's disadvantage is its location. It's too far west and so travel is a *****.

I am now in Adelaide have attended the Adelaide university and the Magill campus. There are 4 Uni's here to chose from Flinders Adelaide, Magill, and City Central.
Adelaide is central to all other States and it is easy to skip across the border into Victoria by car (7hrs) or fly 1 hr and 2 hrs to Sydney. So Chose Adelaide It has the cheapest living and rents and give me a hoy when you get here. Cheers

If you like outdoors then ANYWHERE in Australia is good.

Adelaide is nice - as answered above. Not a big city but beautiful and historical. But it can be very hot in summer. It has the reputation of having the most disgusting water of the whole continent.
Hobart and Perth is away from everywhere. But they have their own attractive qualities. Perth is a beautiful city with good weather. Hobart can get very cold in winter. It also tends to be wet most of the time. If you like wilderness - you will like living in Tasmania.
Canberra is great! (But only because I am biased) I live in the region and I love it. It is also near enough to Sydney to do a day trip. The weather is rather extreme though -very hot in summer and cold nights in winter (but no snow - only occasional morning fall if it gets really really cold - every 10 - 15 years)

However, the decision is up to you as it really depends on what you are going to be studying. Remember that the Australian National University is here in Canberra.

As for drinks, yeah - I'll be in that! Canberra has the most restaurant/eating place per capita in Australia. So I will be waiting for you at the "local water hole".

Cheers, mate.

I'm with Shelty who answered a couple of spots above here- Adelaide and Perth sound the best options for you if you like an outdoor lifestyle. The weather in Canberra is shocking - unless the main outdoor activity you like is skiing. The main problem with Perth is the distance to the rest of Australia (especially the cost of flying there). Laid back would also not be my description of Canberra.

It depends what type of place you want to live in.
Canberra has 4 distinct seasons, sometimes with snow or frost in the winter.Canberra also has Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery , the National Library of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia,Parliament House, the High Court , Royal Australian Mint,Captain Cook Memorial,Telstra Tower ,Duntroon,Australian National Botanic Gardens ,National Zoo and Aquarium, the National Dinosaur Museum,Questacon, and the Australian Institute of Sport.Canberra also has the international embassies and consulates, which are really interesting.

Hobart:Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania.Tasmania is a state of Australia, but it is actually a very small Island off the coast of the mainland. It is home to the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens,
Sydney to Hobart yacht race ,and the Hobart summer festival.

I don't live in any of those cities,I live in a rural area, but my pick would definitely be Canberra.

Sydney
Adelaide is tiny hot and boring, Perth is a bit better but a pimple on the edge of nowhere, Hobart is small quaint isolated ........green but small if you will only go to those choices Canberra would be best has a foolish climate in winter and is close to Sydney
