I've been breast feeding my 7 week old from the start!! And lately for the past 1-2 wks or so, he's been fussing a little while nursing then screaming after he's done for about 10-15 minutes?? I do try and burp him, sometimes he does and sometimes not, but whether or not he does he cries. He's not constipated, but he does spit milk out sometimes while nursing, or it'll drip out too. And he spits up too. I didn't think breast fed babies got gas much anyways?? So, I don't know what's bugging him? No fever or anything else I've noticed going on? Any advice or insight? Thanks this is my first too!!!!!

It may be something you are eating. I had to eliminate onions from my diet when I was breastfeeding. All the things that cause gas when eaten will cause gas when passed on through the breastmilk. Somethings make the milk taste wierd, too.

Keep burping him until he burps - mine sometimes needed to be burped for 10-15 minutes before she would produce a burp.

Hmmm.... for many babies there isnt neccessarily something wrong with their digestive tract...but just the fact that there are gas bubbles and knocks and pains ...it can scare the baby. He may be reacting to that...keep him upright...after a feed. i agree try burping until you get a burp...remember too he is getting bigger now and will need plenty of milk....are you feeding on both sides? are you letting him take his own sweet time to finish eating? This too shall pass!

I've found that playing some calming music while nursing helped, some nice quiet classical music, that's not fast, and not loud. I know that it's frustrating, I nursed both of mine until they were a year old. I also read to them while I was nursing, it seemed to help when they heard my voice. Just don't give up on nursing, it's one of the best bonding experiences there is.

Watch what you are eating and drinking. Whatever you ingest so does baby, and certain foods will upset or cause gas to his tummy. Then you could also try the mylecan drops before feedings or after them. The off brand works great too!!! Good Luck!!!!!

Its likely something you are eating. Cut out onions, green pepper any spicy things. Lots of women have this problem, its very common.

I would suggest that you contact the Le Leche League or the lactation specialist at the hospital you delivered at.

My wife says it might be your diet but to check with "La Leche League" at www.lalecheleague.org. They'll be the best resource for you.
