Meditation requires absolute privacy and silence, first of all. Additionally, when you meditate, you concentrate inwardly on your body as opposed to anything else.

It helps if you are comfortable and warm for several minutes, let's say 5-10 minutes. Then, as you are sitting or lying down, again comfortably, you start the following:

1) Concentrate on your breathing. Breathe deeply but slowly. Then as you inhale, concentrate on filling your lungs from the bottom - up. This can be tough... As you exhale, do the opposite, 'deflate' your lungs from the top - down. Fill your lungs from the bottom - up... Release air from the top - down. There is no timing at this point, as timing is not important. Once you are successful at this...

2) While you're STILL breathing as I described above (inhale.. fill from the bottom - up... release from the top - down) you concentrate on COMPLETELY relaxing the muscles at the very top of your head. Once these are relaxed, relax the muscles a little farther down your head. Then keep going down... relax the forehead, the eyebrows, the eyelids... The point is to relax EACH muscle in your body from the very top of your head to the tips of your toes, gradually, but in that order. It's hard to explain. If you mess up, OOPS, you have to start over. : ) And you won't get it right the first time. That's OK.

As you're doing all this, you'll feel not only an incredible feeling of satisfaction and self control, but that you don't care about anything else in the world.

Try going to a Yoga class, or pick up a book.

This page is from my site. It talks about meditation and has 2 guided meditations that are free to use. The meditations run around 7 minutes so they're great for a beginner.

Hope you enjoy.

Yeh,I can do this when I'm on my own
& it works best if I know no-one is going to come bursting into the room.
I stand up, close my eyes & focus on the spot towards the middle of my forehead, seeing that as a light.
Sometimes, that needs balancing...
Then I tense my body & move to music which sends me!
concentrating on making each movement the way I want it to be, so that it feels right.
That helps realign muscles etc., & I stretch my fingers.
I'm asking myself: How Do I Feel?
Somehow that's clears my thoughts & I can see things...
I get pictures coming into my mind
which I can focus on...

I taught myself that cos chanting never helped me, nor did sitting on my bum with my legs crossed.
I don't use candles, I do like to have subdued lighting.

be in a dark quiet room. Light a candle, look at it long enough to see the image of the flame in my mind and concentrate on my breathing!

Sit down, close my eyes and concentrate.

I "remember / play back" a piece of instrumental music or focus on my breathing if I'm finding it hard to relax, but usually don't need to do it.
