An example will clarify you...
A person who is stressed about what the boss said to him one day. So, he lost his ability to sleep because the boss complained about his work.
But the next day, he found out the boss was talking about the tv character, not him. So, he misunderstand.
So the matter is things he heard. Mind is how he takes it.
If he took it lightly or tried to find out right away if the boss did mean him, he probably had a good night sleep
so, that is what mind over matter means. Lot of times, it is really from our mind, not from the matter or fact you think you know it is true.
Of course, that is only example and that example is about negative mind over matter. There are positive mind over matter as well.
Like if you are craving for some food, but you tell your mind that that is not good for you. You dont need to eat it. You stop, then it means positive mind over matter

mind over matter is a saying that means to put your mind over whatever problem you have. For example, say if you have like an extremely bad headache or you just broke up with your boyfriend/girlfriend you would not think about the pain or sorrow, instead mind your mind in some other place and think about something better or happier

"Mind over matter" is a phrase popularized during the 1960s and 1970s. It originally was used in reference to paranormal phenomena such as extra-sensory perception and psychokinesis. However, it has also been used in reference to mind-centric spiritual and philosophic doctrines such as responsibility assumption. It is the belief that the mind is more powerful than the body. For example, "self-help" personalities such as Tony Robbins claim that, through the power of concentration and "positive thinking", people can walk on hot coals without getting burned.

Mind over matter suggests that your mind can convince you do some thing that your body may not want to. Like working out for example, you may feel tired and lazy so you don't want to go to the gym, but it's really a "mind over matter" deal because you can think about the benefits long enough and you can convince yourself to go even though you don't want to.

Matter
1. the substance or substances of which any physical object consists or is composed: the matter of which the earth is made.
2. physical or corporeal substance in general, whether solid, liquid, or gaseous, esp. as distinguished from incorporeal substance, as spirit or mind, or from qualities, actions, and the like.
3. something that occupies space.
It's basically saying that the mind can overcome obstacles that seem as though there's no way around it, assuming your strength of will is strong enough.

You can ease pain by using 'mind over matter' - i.e., by thinking of something completely different from the pain. I suppose it is some form of meditation as in yoga, but that is what I believe the saying to mean.

It means using the way you think to control and overcome the way you feel.
"Mind" is the mental aspect, while "matter" is the physical.
Your body might tell you that you are tired, hungry, in pain, etc., but you can sometimes convince yourself that you are alright or better through the power of mental assertion.

The matter part is reffering to anything that you can phisically grasp. It is basically saying that your mind can rise above and overcome anything in the phisical world.

"Mind over matter" in my experience can mean a couple of things. Firstly, if you put your mind to a problem (or matter), you can overcome it. Secondly, and this one I say all the time... "If you don't mind, it don't matter!"
