It depends on how your green card and I-94 are stamped, and how you're travelling.

By air - you need a passport AND your green card (and naturalization papers, etc). By vehicle or sea, you need proof of citizenship and photo ID for now, changing to passport in relatively near (June 2008?) future.

To cross the border (in either direction) you need to be able to provide proof of citizenship and a photo ID ... both of which are valid at the time of crossing. For this purpose, driver's licence OR passport OR military photo ID will suffice for the photo portion, and ONLY passport or birth certificate will suffice for the proof of citizenship.

To re-enter the US, you WILL need your green card and anything else (like landed immigrant papers, naturalization papers, etc).

It doesn't mean they WILL ask you for them - but if they DO ask, and you haven't got them - it will be a very short trip (or a very long one, depending on which side of the border you're on at the time!).

If you go now, you only need photo ID, 2 pieces are good, driver`s licence the best. The rules will soon be changing however, though the exact time this will happen seems to change. When the new rules come into effect, you will need a passport.

I have a friend from Canada and he just went back home and came back, and he did need his passport but he flew. Starting June 1 2009 you will need a passport to drive or go by boat. see the link below, but it sounds like you're good to go.
