I've recently taken in a stray cat who, although mostly skin and bones (hungry), appeared to be pregnant. She's been with me for about two weeks now and has since gotten very healthy in size. But just today, I found that she had given birth to a kitten VERY EARLY. I found it in her bed, dead and looked the way aborted babies look but it was developed enough to tell it was a kitten.

I have a few questions, so please try to answer.

1. I'm sure she will, but is it likely that she will get very depressed from this?

2. Could she still be pregnant? I mean, could she have had one baby way too early because it was dead but still have babies inside of her?

Please help! I've been taking care of her and trying hard to find her a good home but now that this has happened, I'm very worried for her.

Thank you all for your answers and advice. I'll continue to keep a look out in case she may still be pregnant and of course, give her love and care. Hopefully she's healthy, most of all! Thank you!

I was pretty sure of the answer to number two, but I looked it up just in case.

Yes, she may still be pregnant! A Mama can miscarry one or more kittens and continue to have a "normal" pregnancy with the rest of her litter.

Chances are, she won't be too depressed about it. Probably more confused than anything. Give her a bit more love and affection just in case!

It's best to give her a high quality, high calorie kitten food while she is pregnant. (I use Nutro - it can be bought at a pet supply store like Petco.) This will provide the extra nutrients that she needs to help bulk up and supply nutrients to the babies.

She could get depressed at not having a live kitten, but not necessarily. Just do your best to provide for her and she will be alright after a while.

Yes, she could still be pregnant. Cats are able to carry two litters at different stages of development. So there could still be a kitten/kittens in there.

Take her to a vet to find out for sure. Then, if she has no more kittens, get her spayed. THEN you can find her a home. Otherwise she could get out ahnd pregnant again and wind up in the same condition you found her in.

She wont still have babies in her, she may have abosrbed any other babies because she was so unhealthy when you found her. The best thing you can do is love her and spend time with her. You are doing a wonderful thing.

cats are pretty resilient, she'll get over it. cats have a tendancy to get rid of kittens, that wont survive, if she was undernourished (skinny) then the kitten would not develop properly,
