I use glossy for everyday snaps, and macro work.

Matte for weddings and portraits.

Their characteristics are different. Matte is softer and subdued. Glossy is brighter and sharper. Glossy does show prints, (not if your hands are clean) but usually they can be buffed off. I put my photos in albums anyway.

There are also differing qualities amongst the paper manufacturers. Not all glossy is created equal! Or matte. We won't even get into luster, rag, chrome, etc etc

If you're printing at home, you will get wildly different prints from paper to paper. (i.e. Epson paper may look great, but Kodak paper sucks and so on. Epson paper looks fine in my Epson and Canon printers, Canon is fine with Canon, and regular Kodak looks horrible in the Canon, but the Ultra Kodak looks fine!) Rule of thumb, use your printer's paper instead of a third party paper unless you don't mind wasting a few bucks and a few prints.

The question is much more of a personal preference than anything. It also depends what you plan on printing on this paper. Black and white looks best in glossy, but if it's color paper, glossy looks a bit over the top and is used more for fashion shots. Matte color paper usually works very well and is not as flat as matte b+w paper. But in the end, it's all about how you want your pictures to look and is a personal choice.

I absolutely prefer matte. They look more professional than glossy, don't show fingerprints nearly so badly, and in general have a better appearance.

The only time I like glossy is with true black-and-white film. Don't work for me with C41 process B/W film.

It's a matter of taste, really. Glossy photos have an annoying glare if you're viewing them in a room that has bright lights, and they show finger prints when you pass them around to oafs who won't handle them by their edges.
Matte finishes are better on portraits because of their softer appearance.

Glossy reproduce better for scanning and copying and are a bit sharper, but they easy get finger prints.

I absolutely prefer glossy. It also makes for a sharper photo.
