We're making that transition, too. What's working for us is for me to sit with him every evening as he's settling into his bed - we turn the TV off an hour before bedtime - and each evening, I move the chair about 6" closer to the door. Eventually, I'll be in the hallway and the door will be closed. He also loves jelly beans, and we're using those as treats - if he stays in bed at night he gets two jelly beans first thing in the morning.
We just converted my son's crib to a toddler bed on Sunday, and he's doing ok using this method. Still some fussing - but it's getting better.
Good luck!

Put him in and keep putting him back in until he realizes you are not going to let him get up. Don't hold him down. Just keep putting him back in. Sit close by the bed till he finely fall asleep after about a week he will know that you are not going to let him get up and he will stay there. That was the tip someone gave me and it worked like a charm. Make sure you have a railing for the toddler bed too. We had an incident with our son, he hit his head falling onto the floor in his sleep. We took a regular railing and ducked taped it on on the bottom of the bed then put the mattress over.

I skipped the whole toddler bed thing and went straight for the twin mattress. I saw it as a waste of money because within a year kids are usually too big for them. We stuck the mattress on the floor so if he rolled out of bed it wouldn't hurt. It also made it easier for him to get in and out of it. You could also consider a bed railing. It helps keep them in and it feels a little like a crib. Overall it will probably take him a few weeks to get fully adjusted. Good luck!

Hi, My son is 22 mnths old now. We first put him in a toddler bed about 1 mnth ago (so about age 21 mnths) his toddler bed was a whole new experience for him since it was in a whole new "big boy" room. The first night I let him fall asleep in my lap and we put him in bed. He woke up shaking, he was very scared, so that night I put him back in his crib. The next night we let him fall asleep in the toddler bed. this worked perfectly, since he knew where he was when he fell asleep he was not scared when he woke up. Since then we have had no problems. His room is child proofed and he has a night light. recently he has hit a "stage" of waking up round 4am wanting to play. I posted the ? on here for help was told to put a gate in his room then when he wakes he will play and fall back asleep, as sure thing he did. He woke up cryed a min or two played a min crawled back in bed and back asleep, and he is now back in the sleeping all night routine.
good luck. just keep consitant it will work.

If the side comes off his crib, try removing it. Adjust the mattress as low as possible so he won't have far to fall. We kept DS in the crib in this manner for a few months. The transition to a twin bed was no problem by then.

Take him to the store and let him pick out the bedding....most chain stores will have sets that have a flat sheet, fitted sheet, pillow case and comforter....explain to him that he's moving to a big boy bed and that you need help picking out something for it to "wear".....and let him really pick...even if it doesn't match the room.....
