Aside from the sour taste which is impossible to miss, is using baking soda dangerous to either the teeth or the gums?

A lot of people do use it to clean and try to whiten their teeth, it's not highly recommended though because of patient misuse. It is an abrasive material that if used too long, or with too much pressure, it can cause irreversible damage to both teeth and gums. Problems that patients present after using baking soda when trying to whiten-brighten-clean their teeth are hypersensitivity, tissue erosion and tooth brush abrasion. Really all most patients need is a professional cleaning and then to continue with excellent home care with regular (whitening) tooth paste and flossing. Most damage comes from the over zealous "scrubbing" of the teeth, which can cause the hypersensitivity, tissue erosion and then the tooth brush abrasion. This "scrubbing" gets the tissue inflamed and can cause it to recede or erode leaving the tooth uncovered where the tissue used to be, exposing the softer cementum above the enamel. The teeth usually become hyper sensitive along with this. Then the excessive brushing can cut grooves in the tooth at the gum line just above the enamel, at the more delicate, softer cementoenamel junction where the tissue has receded or been pretty much just scrubbed away. This can be done with any over brushing with too much pressure or a hard bristle tooth brush. That’s one reason we always recommend a soft tooth brush. But baking soda really helps it along by being such an abrasive material. It's ok to use in moderation, but don't expect to get pearly whites and stains off your teeth immediately. The easiest way to remove the stains that have built up and get them as white as possible is to see your dentist for a professional cleaning and discuss the whitening process. There are several ways to obtain that beautiful white smile without jeopardizing your dental health. Hope I've been of help and that you’ll think a little more before using baking soda. Good luck!

Brushing with baking soda is fine. It's good for whitening and makes bad breath go away.

Not at all.

Mix that with Perioxide, and follow up with a salt water rinse and you've got the best toothpaste available. Try adding a few drops of food grade peppermint oil.

Just don't swallow it.

no, it is safe and has been used for about 100 years. Don't swallow the baking soda.

No. It's just a salt. People were using salt powders of one kind or another long before they invented toothpaste which is just a combination of a number of things. Among them; chalk!
