Ok I feel like a real moron. But when copying files didn't there used to be an option for renaming them if a file already had the same name?

I'm using XP.

Thanks.

I am moving about 5,000 files and am trying to avoid having to go through and find all the matching names and manually rename them

Also I don't really want the original file to be renamed, but if I have to I have to.

If you are COPYing and pasting files: After pasting to the new location any that are duplicates will say "copy of" before the name. Just look to see which ones they are and rename them.

If you are MOVING files: When you highlight and drag the files to a new folder if there are duplicates windows will ask if you want to replace the existing file. Say "No" and that file will remain in the old folder. When you are finished moving all the files you can go back to the old folders, then rename and move them. If you don't want to do this, look for the corresponding files in the new folder and rename those. Now you can move the "original" ones without renaming them.

Not sure I understand your question. Are you trying to do a "mass renaming" of files?

Single left Click on the file and then press F2... allows you to name straight away, no messing with menus
