I'm moving to Brisbane soon. Just wondering if there are many Indians in Brisbane? I was thinking about Sydney but I grew up in a small town in the United States so thought I should consider a medium size location.

What is Brisbane like? Is it all white city? How are foreigners treated there?

Brisbane is nice.. I don't live there but have been there. Australia is VERY multicultural and people are very friendly everywhere.

As Tentofield said - you will get bigotry and prejudice everywhere in the world. So if it happens to you, keep in mind that not all Aussies are like that. I have been over 30 years and never have a problem with anyone treat me badly because of my ethic background. Aussies don't care where you are from as long as you treat them the way you want to be treated. Keep an open mind and keep a sense of humour. Aussies are a sarcastic bunch and we may say things in jest but it could come out sounding like we are insulting you. DON'T be so sensitive and don't take things personally. IF you can do this and get over the culture shock (which may take several years) you will fine.

Cheers, mate.

The White Australia policy died about forty years ago. There are people of all nationalities in all the capital cities and most of the smaller towns. There are certainly Indians in Brisbane. .

In the last two or three years, the Prime Minister's brown-nosing of Bush and Australia's role in Iraq has led to a lot of supposed terrorist threats (which don't actually exist) and a lot of anti- Moslem sentiment in some areas. To some people, anyone who doesn't look European is automatically a Moslem and can be vilified. It is a nasty trend which is not followed by the vast majority of Australians but you will find pockets of intolerance and bigotry - but that will happen anywhere.

On the whole Australia welcomes foreigners and you should have a great time. Brisbane is a growing city with a wide variety of things to do. There is also the Gold Coast just an hour to the south and the more relaxed Sunshine Coast an hour to the north.

Brisbane is NOT an "all-white" city (don't believe everything you hear or read). I'm originally from New Zealand of Polynesian ethinicity, and there are thousands plus, New Zealanders of all backgrounds living in Brisbane. I have family living there for over 25 years and they are enjoying it there, I was there last year and I saw a mixed culture of people in Brisbane. A very popular place.

hi there,
i personally like Melbourne it is too humid in Brisbane, but if you are a beach person they have nice beaches. Melbourne has a lot of night life, plus a lot of cultures including Indian people a lot actually and accept people for who they are not their colour or nationality. the weather in Melbourne sometimes can have 4 seasons in one day, but not all the time, and it has the best world mayor voted this year and he is Chinese and he is great, but if you decide to live in Brisbane you should be OK, Aussie people are great, good luck, oh Sydney is not a small city and there is a lot to do and see there as well

Hi,
There are certainly people of Indian ancestry in Brisbane - and like you, have often come via other countries. "Indian" friends that I knew in Brisbane when I lived there years ago were from Fiji and Britain. You will be welcome in Brisbane - just come with a mind open to ways that may be different to what you are used to. (But I guess that is why we travel -to see and experience different things). Good luck with your move.

Not sure about Indians. I'm sure there would be. No it's not an all white city. Heaps of Asians. Plus you have the Sunshine coast that surrounds Brissy to. It's hot and muggy there and they are running out of water. Can't even water their grass or wash their cars. Just be careful of the city at night.
