Is it just because they think they have hit the top rung of "sucess?"

What is with the god-like superiortiy complex many have, very condescending.

A lot of doctors believe that they do have a god-like status as when we are ill, it is them that can decide wether we can live or die, and this makes them feel like they can do anything!

I work in a hospital and have had many run-ins with a certain doctor who believes that very thing, he not long ago became a professor and since that very day has demanded that everybody call him professor, even other doctors the same rank as him.

Its pathetic but thats the way some of them are.

Ya know...I've worked around doctors for much of my adult life...in the last four years I worked as a medical staff secretary in a small community hospital and recently began working as a residency coordinator in teaching hospital. I had that same assumption about ALL doctors before I started working with them. I can now say that while that may be true for just a few...for the most part that could not be farther from the truth. They are human...they know it and they know we know it. Many make mistakes...many do the same stupid stuff as us mere mortals. But at the same time, they don't get to be where they are without being gifted. For a person to become a physician, they have to do four years premed, four years medical school followed up by a 3-6 year residency and then maybe at least one fellowship after that. That makes them highly skilled individuals and they make that far, they definitely have hit on success.

And btw, they do get miserable pay as residents and fellows...I make around the same as them and I'm basically just a secretary with a 2-year (plus some) degree. They've more than likely got loans up in the 6 figures they'll have to pay back, most of my guys already have families (including a few with sets of twins and one with a child with a physical disability) and the competition they have to face can be fierce.

Yea those types of doctors really and truthfully dont care cause they are getting paid really good money and by not caring they just have to deal with the next patient, if anything you need to find a doctor that truthfully loves his job and loves his patients and wants to help them.

Go to school for 8-10 years beyond High School, intern in miserable conditions for miserable pay for a couple of years. Maybe loose your family during this time. Kiss lots of Butts to get a good residency. Not really start earning some money until you are about 35. Get recertified all the time.

Save a child's life. Save my sons life. Then come at us with this arrogant statement. When that little boy of mine was on the operating table, that doctor was God.

Now, what have you done for humanity?

I don't find doctors arrogant, maybe you just got a bum one, happens in all walks of life.

They are arrogant because you need them. If a doctor had to wait 4 hours just to see the mechanic about fixing his car would he be pissed off? Of course he would. But we sit and wait, especially in the hospital casualty department just to find out we have a doctor whos english is so bad that you need a translator just to figure out what they are saying. But we do it because we need them. This makes some of them very arrogant. They are Doctors of course so we should bow down to their god-like persons.

I agree totally....also think that it rubs off on a lot of the receptionists too! i can never seem to get past the receptionist without giving them my life story and it is they who seem to decide whether I'm unwell enough to see the Doctor!

I agree whole heartedly with your question. I have had many run ins with doctors that have a "holier than thou" attitude. Sometimes I wonder if it's because they can almost play God with your life. Basically, your life is in their hands and they know how to control it.

On a lighter note, I have met a few doctors in my days as well that have been absolutely wonderful to me, very down to earth and that have great bedside manor.

It really all depends on who you choose and what luck you have.
