My uncle is a regular smoker. i am trying to get him to quit, but it's not working. whenever i get serious on him, he just brushes me off like i'm a little kid. i'm 17. he does not take me seriously at all. he is a hard headed and selfish uncle, but he has a big heart. i bet that heart would be even bigger if he didnt smoke. he has a lot of love.
every time i get angry, it seems like i push him away from me. i don't think my fighting is doing any good. my fighting seems to be working in reverse. ya know how when you tell a little kid not to do something, and then they go and do it anyway? yeah it feels kinda' like that.
i have even spilled my heart out to false promises and ultimately defeat. everything i do is of no avail.
what should i do? it seems like nothing is working. i can't get through to my hard headed uncle.

I'm sure he knows how bad smoking is for him. Most smokers cannot just put down the cigarettes because a loved one expresses concern. It may make them think about quitting more though.
Gather info on successful quitting methods and give it to him. Maybe he'll read something that sounds like it might work for him.
I suggest quitsmoking.com and also quittingsmoking.com
Don't be upset if he doesn't quit. There's not much YOU can do about it.
Good luck

Just like those with alcohol and drug problems, the smoker has to want to quit smoking themselves. You are not doing him any favors by yelling at him. If and when he realizes that he doesn't feel as well as he should; or that he is taking years off his life--he will do something to quit.
Let him alone, maybe he will think about it more if no one is bit*hing at him all the time.

Take small steps. Instead of asking him to quit all together ask him to quit smoking around you. Explain to him that if he wants to hurt him self then go ahead, but his smoke isn't going to hurt you too. Talk about the benefits of quiting. More money, won't have to worry about smoke free places, won't stink, won't have a yellow discolored home or vehicle. He won't quit until he wants to. There is a website that has pictures and stories about people who got lung cancer from smoking. http://www.whyquit.com
this site also has a lot of resources to help you uncle to quit when he gets to that point.

I know you love him. But he has to help himself. Quitting smoking is a mental thing. He has to realize that he wants to better himself and change that before you can try to tell him to quit. The only thing I can tell you that might change him is when he lights up, walk away. Because it is hurting your health by inhaling the smoke.

I quit 3 years ago... its tough and its a personal choice one makes. If you really want to help him see the damage he is doing to himself and others then get the literature and give it to him. do not allow him to smoke in your home. but don't lecture him, its hard enough giving the nicotine...He has to want to quit....

He is a grown man, and set in his ways. You can't change him or anyone for that matter. What he chooses to do to his health is his own business and not yours.
