In depends on the country and UK representation in that country. The head representative in an embassy (found in non Commonwealth countries) is called the Ambassador. The head representative in a High Commission (found in Commonwealth countries) is the High Commissioner. This diplomatic missions are there to protect the interests of the UK. The UK may also have Consular Missions overseas and representatives could have a variety of titles depending on level of importance and responsibility (with Consular General being the most senior). Consular Missions have fewer responsibilities than DImplamtic Missions in that there are primarily in a country to protect the interests of UK citizens.
