Just do a Google search for DVD/CD burners, you will get hundreds of them, and just starting clicking on each one and judge for your self, or go to www.cnet.com, serach DVD/CD burners, they will give a listing, but 9 times out of ten each one will have Reviews by users that enter feedback on how it worked.

I'd recommend an LG internal DVD writer. Allegedly CloneDVD is the best one to use for movies, obviously I wouldn't know first hand...

There are plenty of websites that can do file conversion, including movies. For example Zamzar is very good with loads of acepted formats.

Well i use DvDSanta for all my backups and it's cheap .. Asuming you want to encode avi's or divx ,It encodes aswell as backup originals .
To backup your originals yes dvd shrink is good .. you may need ripit4me too which is also free
