In general, emoticons are not spyware in themselves.

Your friends might mean commercially-purchased icons, though. Sites like smiley.com are very suspect. They advertise that they'll give you tons of emoticons to use in email and on the web, but they also install lots of spyware and other undesirable things on your computer.

Be sure to read the End User License Agreement (EULA) on any site before you download.

Emoticons are simply the smileys that are inserted into instant messages or emails when you type certain characters. I'm sure you are familiar with :) for example.

Just like anything else on your computer, you do need to be careful where and how you get emoticons. Some disreputable web sites will offer a program that installs malware (spyware, adware, trojans, viruses, etc) along with the emoticons.

Be careful where you get your emoticons and you should be fine.
