Here's a trick my Mom uses, she says it never fails:

Fill a pot with cold water and add sausages (the sausages will sink to the bottom).

Let the water heat to a rolling boil.

When the sausages raise and begin to float -- they're done. Just drain carefully so you don't burn yourself with the hot water or the steam, and enjoy.

[This is for something like polish sausage, btw.]

What size sausages are we talking about? If they're small breakfast-type sausages (about the width of a finger), add water to come about halfway up the sides of the sausages, bring them just to the boil, then reduce the heat to low and poach them covered for 4 minutes. If they're the bigger ones, like an inch diameter, do the same thing but poach them 8 minutes. Either way, at the end of the cooking time, pour out the water, poke each sausage one or two times with a fork, and brown them a minute or two on each side.

For uncooked sausage put your sausage in a skillet and add about 1/4 inch of water to the pan. Cover and steam until water is gone, then brown and serve. Depending on how big your sausages are, you might need to try cutting one to see if the liquids run clear or are still pink.
