An AVI file will already be compressed, probably specifically for sending over the net as that's pretty much the major reason compression codecs for AVI files exists. So basically there's not much you can do, aside from compress it even more (which will make it look like ***) or drop the resolution down, which is a far from trivial task and very likely beyond you if you're even asking this question.

Unless that avi file is straight from a camcorder and is uncompressed, then it is already smaller.
You could try to compress it more using the Divx encoder ( http://www.divix.com ) or an xvid encoder. If you do that, it will take hours - depending on the length of the original video.

A video converter is needed. What I normally do is to convert avi or divx files into video types like flv or wmv which r used by most popular online video websites.

avi files can be compressed using Adobe premere which is not for free unless you look for some4 old version.
Old version of real Producer would result in compressed real player files.
