The word always goes with "country" -- i.e. "country bumpkin" and is another word for "yokel" or a gauche, rather uncouth person from the country, who is awkward in his ways and without the sophisticated manners of the town. It very obviously rhymes with "pumpkin" -- in fact, it is the only word which does -- and this emphasises the ungainliness and earthiness of the person concerned.
