Both Poornima and Amavasya are Sanskrit words People who follow the lunar calender count the days basing on the moon.
Poornima means Poor nah + Ma. The meaning is poorna means full and ma means moon. Moon can be seen in full form on this day.
Amavasya is AMA+vasya. Here Ama means both sun and moon. Vasya means keeping to gether. Both sun and moon stay together means come in one line hence we can not see moon on this Day.
After amavasya moon will appear and start growing and reach full form by poornima and then start getting reduced till Amavasya on which day he will totally disappear. This entire period is taken as one month as per lunar calender. This one month and our English calender month are not exactly equal. But there are other adjustments in lunar calender to reconcile it periodically by adding one extra month after 3 or 4 years..

Poornima means the full moon day.

Amavasya is the Indic name for a new-moon. The word Amavasya is common to many Indian languages especially Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.

The fortnight containing the new-moon is considered auspicious by Hindus. They believe that during this period, the offerings they make, reach their late forefathers. Every month, the new-moon day is considered auspicious and poojas are made. However, no travel ought to be scheduled the first day of the new moon, as travel without moonlight in the ancient times was forbidden.

The dark fortnight of Aswayuja (September-October) is known as the Mahalaya Paksha or the fortnight specially sacred for offering oblations to the departed ancestors. The last day of this period, the new moon day, is considered as the most important day in the year for performing obsequies and rites.
