I have a 12 year old Lhasa Apso. He has never liked to be groomed so I don't do it that often. Needless to say by the time I bring he he is really bad. Everytime I have him groomed he is sick for like two days following the grooming. He shakes and seems sick. Has anyone ever had this happen to their dog? If so what should I do?

I have tried other groomers and the same thing always happens- that is another reason why I don't take him that often. He tries to bite them and has to be muzzled during it.

Talk to your vet about this as well as your groomer. The groomer should be aware of this and willing to work with your dog. This is in the best interest for everyone whos involved. The dog, you and the groomer.
My dog bites also. Some dogs just bite (mostly out of fear), but I have used the same groomer for 4 years and after lots of work she does not have to muzzle her always. But it took time and effort and most of all a groomer that is willing to work with both you and the dog. But, it may turn out your dog may always have to be muzzeled. My dog has moody days like people. Some people recommend holistic remedies before your dog gets groomed. And some vets can give medication.
Good Luck. Your pooch is worth it.

Well, if it happens at every groomer, then I wouldn't think there is any mistreatment or rough handeling going on.
I am thinking that since he hates being groomed in the first place, he is probably giving the groomer a hard time, and also needs to be muzzled. That is stressful enough on a dog. Throw in the fact that he doesn't get groomed very often and is probably a matted mess , that when he does need to go to the groomer, he needs to be shaved down. Getting through all those matts takes longer and is harder on any dog, let along a 12 yr old dog! Also, if you are taking him to a different groomer everytime, that could stress him out too.
What would I suggest??
Stick to 1 groomer who has the patience to work on an old, difficult dog. See if that groomer will schedule your dog on a quiet day where he/she can get him in and out in no more than 2 hours.
Even though he is 12 yrs old, he really should be on a regular grooming schedule..every 4-8 weeks. Even if he is just coming in for a bath, brush and face trim. This will help keep matting to a minimal and make grooming much easier on him (and the groomer.
OR...You may want to look into having a mobile groomer come out and groom your dog at home. Have you ever tried one? They are a little more expensive, but he will be the only dog in the van, it will be quiet, he won't have to take a car ride...he may just do a little better in that kind of environment.
I would not suggest sedating or tranquilizing a 12 yr old dog.

He is older now, and a grooming trip, if he is infrequently groomed could be stressful in and of itself.
Some groomers cage dry dogs and frankly, some aren't real aware or concerned about how hot it can get or how stressful that can be on a dog of any age but especially one that is the age of your dog.
You might try another groomer if you don't trust the one you have now to tell you how your dog is groomed from start to finish. If you decide to try a new one, tell them how stressed he would get at the previous groomer's and ask them not to cage dry him. Some grooming shops do their grooming where people can walk by and see as animals are being groomed. I like that because then a person sees how animals are handled.

Could be many different things going on there. First of all, the fact that you don't get him groomed often could be WHY he hates it and reacts so badly to it. Grooming needs to be done regularly, and frequently to get a dog used to it and to keep your pet in good condition so that the grooming procedure is NOT such a tedious one! Have you tried going to a different groomer? Being a groomer myself it pains me to say this, but maybe your dog is being mistreated by the groomer. Not all groomers deal well with catering to the needs of elderly pets. Too much stress during the groom, contorting limbs too much, etc can cause the grooming to be a traumatic experience.
You can always ask your groomer to do the groom in steps. One day just do the bath and drying, the next day do the haircut. Or whatever order you and the groomer come up with that would cause your dog minimal stress.

It's cause he is very old and the stress of going out to get groomed does make him sick. See if you can find a mobile groomer that will groom him in your house while you are there to minimize the stress on your dog.

It seems like your dog gets really stressed from grooming. I would suggest doing your own grooming at home. Your lhasa apso may not have a perfect hair cut, but at least he won't be sick afterwords.

You don't do anything. It's a stress/anxiety reaction.
I worked in a grooming shop and I've seen it all. After cuts dogs seem "embarressed", upset, depressed, anxious.
It's kinda tramatic and if they really hate it then it's a very stressful situation.
Just comfort him. He'll be okay

since your dog is older (84) he is shaking to try and warm up after the bathing, etc.....just like grandma can't take the cold like she used to-same way with your dog...it's part of getting older.
just make sure he has something really warm ready to be wrapped around him afterwards and he'll be fine.
