I've noticed lately that alot of people who call themselves Atheists are only Atheists because they despise and distrust organized religion and faith. Some even judge hatefully and condescend towards the people who have faith.

That doesn't seem like the real thing though. It seems that true Atheism is simply a worldview that simply does not involve a mythological God (i.e. a mythological God in the true literary sense of mythology). There is nothing wrong with spirituality and commitment to a higher natural order now is there? I'm thinking of Buddhism and the sort.

Am I right or no?

I do not believe that god exists, yet I cant prove he doesnt...
I choose to judge noone by religion, as I wish to be done the same for me...
I chose to be AGNOSTIC... Which isnt athiesm... Athiesm is when you beleive that god doesnt exist no matter what, which usually is similar to a pagan religion, in differnet gods...

But agnostic, is what alot of people are turning to, because they are confused and this is the only way to be able to have some comfort knowing your not totally lost, and that there are others like you...

Being an atheist simply means not to believe in God. Whoever doesn't believe in God is a "true atheist". What other views atheists have differs a lot. Some hate religion and some don't. Atheism is not a belief system with any defined ideas.

Yes and no.

There's an overlap - some people are only anti-religion and not as such atheist - if someone comes on here saying they're losing their faith because they've had a horrible few months and their friend died I'd tell them to go see a priest.

You don't free yourself from monstrous deities by rebelling - you deconstruct them and see that they don't exist. Of course many true atheists, myself included I must admit - are anti-religion because of their interference in politics and disgustingly ignorant views in scientific matters and philosophy in general.

No. You're not right. You don't get to decide who is a "True Atheist". Since that would be a logical fallacy of the same type as those who accuse others of not being a "True Christian" or a "True Scotsman".

If someone says they are atheist, and has no belief in gods, they are. Whether or not they also despise religion has nothing to do with it.

I think you are close on this one. I have never met an atheist. These rooms seem full of them. But I really doubt it too. More likely just going with what seems cool. But not understanding. Most would not dare say it to their parents.

You are correct. Atheism means "Does not believe in god". Nothing more. Nothing less.

Now, for myself, not only don't I believe in god but I do not find anything appealing about religion or religious institutions. That doesn't mean I hate them. There like brussel sprouts. Nothing I want but if other people like - that's fine with me.

I think you're thinking of atheism (whether weak or strong, it doesn't matter) and anti-theism. They are two different things. An atheist either does not believe that god(s) exist ("weak atheism") or asserts that god(s) does/do not exist ("strong atheism"). An anti-theist actively opposes theism and religion.

I am an atheist, 38, one of four atheists in my family. Two of us are also anti-theists (my older cousin and me). For us, there are no "true" atheists, you're either an atheist or you aren't. As I said, weak or strong, it doesn't matter, one is not better than another.

I would have to say I am both and they are completely separate mechanisms in my world view.
