Please do not be scared. I have a butterfly on my back near my left shoulder and the pain wasn't that bad. At first it's not bad, then they keep going over it and to me it felt like a sunburn. It's just aggravating pain after a while. It's not gonna make you cry or nothing though. So it's like a sunburn with an aggravating sting. Mine was kinda big. It probably depends on where your gonna get it as to how much pain you will feel also. I am thinking about getting something on the back of my neck! Good Luck!

This is what I have told everybody, including my wife, then she got one and she agrees with me and tells the same to all her friends. It feels like a rubber band is hitting you very hard continually. You can also compare with a cat scratching your skin.
It all depends of course of what kind of needle they use, where you are doing it, and your own skin. We both have our tattoos in different places and we both agree on how it feels, so I guess is safe to say that is what you can expect to feel as well.
If you think you could be sick, then take some pain medicine an hour before so you can be “relaxed” by the time they do the tattoo. Some people get drunk or even take drugs before doing a tattoo, especially if is a long big one. I do not recommend to do that as you will not be aware of what is going on, and you might end up having it somewhere you don’t really want it or something done wrong.
Good luck and hope you enjoy your new tattoo when you get it!

Hey Leann.....I doing 8 to 9 hours under the needles next month so I've been doing my research.....here is the best article I could find on pain as charted by body location. The key is to relax and not get all tensed up...bring your i-pod or a friend to talk to...its not that bad

ok as a tattoo artist, here is what i tell everyone. " there are far more painful things in life that you will live through and have nothing to show for it except a memory, this will be a memory for the world to see."

It's different for everyone. It all depends on where you are getting it done and what your pain tolerance is. For some it hurts like hell for others it's nothing others are in between. It all depends on you.
Hope this helps and happy tattooing!

Like needles pushing ink into the first few layers of your skin. It's not bad. Tattoos hurt and are very bearable. Everyone will hae a different explanation because everyone feels them differently... "like a bee sting," "It feels like being cut,"...it feel like this, it feels like that....etc. It will feel like needles pushing into into your skin because that's what is happening. Just be calm and STAY STILL for your artist and you will be fine. Don't worry about the pain... No pain, no gain.

You're not mature enough to get a tattoo if you can't speak and type in proper English.

It feels like someone drawing on you hard with a pen. They say the outline hurts more than shading for me personally it was the other way around.
