There is a verse in the Quran that was a little bit shocking to me. It talks about Jews by saying [2:96]:

"you will find them (the Jews) the most greedy of life, even more than the idolaters: each one of them wishes he could be given a life of a thousand years: but the grant of such life will not save him from being tortured by Allah."

I was shocked when I read this verse because I have always thought that Islam (and Quran) always give respect to other religions. Is theer any other meaning for this verse?

this verse has to be taken with the two before it which restrict it to the Jews who think that the heaven is only for them and not for others

here is verse 94

[94] Say to (them): "If the home of the Hereafter with Allâh is indeed for you specially and not for others, of mankind, then long for death if you are truthful."

God bless

Well my brother do you not see the jews? surely they own all bussinesses and do money laundrings such as intrested and loan which jesus didnt liked. and dosen't God know every thing? He does and he knows the nature of jews and so as other people that have not accepted is word and now are destroyed the jews have no respect of thier religion nor their God But as much of the money that they make. jews are greedy the evidence is all around you. Not only allah says jews are greedy in Qu'ran by the whole world says it Even jews them selves are an example of it. Come to Brooklyn and see for your self!

NO u qouted it wrong , its interpertation is as follows:

And you shall find them (the lām of la-tajidannahum is for oaths) the people most covetous of life, and, more covetous of it than, the idolaters, who reject the [idea of the] Resurrection, for the former know that their journey's end will be the Fire, while the idolaters do not believe even in this; any one of them would love, wishes, that he might be given life for a thousand years (law yu'ammar, '[if only] he might be given life': the particle law, 'if only', relates to the verbal noun and functions with the sense of an, 'that', and together with its relative clause explains the [implicit] verbal noun in the object of the verb yawaddu, 'he would love'); yet, any one of them, his being given life (an yu'ammara, 'that he should be given life', constitutes the subject of the verb muzahzihihi, 'that it should budge him' [this verb comes later], as though it were ta'mīruhu, 'the giving of life to him') shall not budge, remove, him from the chastisement, of the Fire. God sees what they do (ya'malūna may be alternatively read ta'malūna, 'you do'), and will requite them. ['Abd Allāh] Ibn Sūryā asked the Prophet (s), or 'Umar [b. al-Khattāb], about which angel brings down the revelation, and he replied that it was Gabriel; he [Ibn Sūryā] then said, 'He is our enemy, because he brings chastisement with him; had it been Michael, we would have believed in him, because he brings fertility and security.' Then, the following was revealed:
Say, to them: 'Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel, let him die in exasperation - he it was that brought it, the Qur'ān, down upon your heart by the leave, by the command, of God, confirming what was before it, of scriptures, a guidance, from error, and good tidings, of Paradise, for the believers.

ps: to understand the Quran u shouldn't get the verses out of its context , rather u should understand the circumstances and why it was sent down to get the wisedom out of it , the Quran is arevelation to All ppl and not just for muslims ,

ialso notice that u changed from taking the hadiths to taking the verses of the Quran !!!
who knows may be u be a true muslim one day !!

My koran says "Indeed, you will find they love this life more than other men: more than the pagans do. Each one of them would love to live a thousand years. But even if their lives were indeed prolonged, that will surley not save them from the scourage. God is watching all theere actions." But before all that it talks about how they betrayed moses with the golden calf, "we hear, but disobey" was there supposed response to the covenent. Truth is mohammad was a crazy guy and he knew of both judaism and christianity before he told his story. I think of him as a televangelist type from 1400 years ago.

Sounds like the words of a bitter and jealous person. If the Quaran is written like that, I guess it explains a lot.

The Torah doesn't focus on Muslims, why all the interest in Jews in the Quran??

""Is theer any other meaning for this verse?""

Nope.They mean what they say.

Insults, slurs, and anything else is OK as long at they say it!
even:

"Not Jesus, but a look alike, was substituted and crucified at the Cross." -4:157
THIS IS BLASPHEMY - AND A LIE! No proof can be offered at all.

It is not representing all jews, but most of them
listen to the story as per islam:
after god saved them with moses from the egyptians and he made the pharaoh to sink, they started worshiping a stone of a sun of cow.
They said: "We are rich and god is Poor"
They sad: "God hand is tied up"
They killed many many profits after moses.
They changed and hide the original old book.
They disbelieved in jesus (pbuh) and killed him.
When god asked them to fight people in jerusalem, they told moses that "go you and your god to fight, we are here sitting".
When they enter the holy city with moses, god asked them to ask for forgivenss. but they said a humelation word.

and so many many situations mentioned in the quran. god gave chances and profits and miracles to jews that he never give to any other nation, and always their actions were disappointing to god.

and finally look at the god mercy that is unbeatable in quran. after all what they did to him, his final response to them is: (surah al esra 17, verse 8):
"It may be that your Lord may (yet) show Mercy unto you. but if ye revert (to your sins), We shall revert (to Our punishments): And we have made Hell a prison for those who reject (all Faith)."

----------------------
Those with faith, those who are Jews, and the Christians and Sabaeans, all who believe in Allah and the Last Day and act rightly, will have their reward with their Lord. They will feel no fear and will know no sorrow. (2:62)
-----------------------

"Rather you will find them (the Tribe of Israel) the people greediest for life, along with the idolaters. One of them would love to be allowed to live a thousand years. But being allowed to live would not save him from the punishment. Allah sees what they do." (2:96)

I will try to explain you in simplest terms possible.

What is meant by the Tribe of Israel:

Generally when talking about any nation it is the majority or the leaders that are a focus of discussion. Here I understand it to be the majority. Because another verse states that;

"If only they had implemented the Torah and the Gospel and what was sent down to them from their Lord, they would have been fed from above their heads and beneath their feet. Among them there is a moderate group but what most of them do is evil." (5:66)

So it becomes clear that there is a group that is moderate but most of them do not follow the command of the Lord. What do you expect of those who do not implement the word or Torah as it was revealed by the Lord?

What is Greed of Life?

Before understanding what is the reason of punishment it must be clear what is greed of life. Greed of life is in humans because of disbelief and wrongdoing. A person who lives a pious life and according to the wishes of the Lord will not be greedy of a long life. Because She/He believes that the life is given by the Lord and everything in this life belongs to the Lord. He/She is satisfied with the length of life alloted to him/her by the Lord because of the belief that his/her deeds will take him/her to Paradise and eternal happiness. It doesn't mean that a true believer doesn't wish for life at all.

"And there are others who say, ‘Our Lord, give us good in this world, and good in the hereafter, and safeguard us from the punishment of the Fire.' " (2:201)

"They will have a good share from what they have earned. Allah is swift at reckoning." (2:202)

Who Will be Punished? :

The verse doesn't say that all who desire to live a thousand years or long lives will be punished. It say that, even if this life is granted the punishment will not be taken away from them if they are wrongdoing. This is true for any one who calls her/himself a Muslim too or any other religion. Lenghtening of life cannot take people away from the punishment of hell (if they have been wrongdoers).

----------------------

Quran does contains many references to the wrongdoings of those who call themselves Muslims also:

"Give news to the hypocrites that they will have a painful punishment." (4:138)

Nobody realises who are the hypocrites? They are those who call themselves Muslims but actually do not follow Quran. Similar to the case described above for The People of Book (Jews and Christians) in verse 5:66

Infact those who call themselves Muslims and are actually hypocrites they will be in the worst part of Hell;

"The hypocrites are in the lowest level of the Fire. You will not find any one to help them, except those who repent and put things right and hold fast to Allah and dedicate their religion to Allah alone; they are with the believers. Allah will give the believers an immense reward." (4:145-146)

"Some of the desert Arabs around you are hypocrites and some of the people of Madina are obdurate in their hypocrisy. You do not know them but We know them. We will punish them twice over and then they will be returned to a terrible punishment." (9:101)

So punishment in Quran is not something mentioned for Jews or Christians or Muslims in particular but for all wrongdoers

-------------------------
(Allah said, ‘I will prescribe My mercy for) those who follow the Messenger, the Ummi, whom they find written down with them in the Torah and the Gospel, commanding them to do right and forbidding them to do wrong, making good things lawful for them and bad things forbidden for them, relieving them of their heavy loads and the chains which were around them. Those who believe in him and honour him and help him, and follow the Light that has been sent down with him, they are the ones who are successful.’ (7:157)
-------------------------

(Please note that it is very important to mention the translator or interpretor becuase some meanings or translations are not accepted as accurate)
