Evangelist goes out into the fields and preach. They aren't pastors, or prophets they are like messengers, but they have an assignment from God like we all do. We shouldn't get all caught up on titles though. Are you ready to be approached by one? A lot of people love to criticize what the people fo God aren't doing, but if one would approach you would you turn over to Christ. That would be the whole purpose of them coming to you in the first place.

The word is from the Greek "euangelos" (eu =good angelos=message). It is the designation of those who were to go around teaching the good news of God's love by sending His son to redeem us from the penalty for our wrongdoing.
So, yes, they should be telling you about Jesus.
