Maybe both days can be observed....Seriously, I don't see why not. But not on the same day, of course.

That's up to you. Valentines wasn't originally about dates. It was about a strong bond of freindship. You could spend time with some of your other single friends. I know how you feel, for the past 19 years, Ive been single-less on the big "V-Day". I even had a boyfriend who dumped me the day before V-day, and I still had to go around with my choir the next day delivering singing valentines.
There's lots of things you can do. Hang out with other single friends, maybe arrange a movie night. Or spend time with your parents, I usually go out to eat with them, and I always have a good time, because I'm with the ones I love.
Being single can suck, especially if all your close friends are suddenly taken, and just LOOOOVVEEE talking about it around you. Up til this year, I would sometimes catch myself being pretty bitter about it. I had a boyfriend for almost 2 years, but he broke up with me alot. So I became a pretty bitter person.
If none of your immediate friends are single, or available to hang out with you, there are STILL many options. Visit your family, or curl up with an excellent book and some hot tea (or beverage of choice). That's usually how I ended a good valentines night of being single after going out with my parents.
I do know how you feel though. I think sometimes people take the "lovey dovey" of valentines too far. Like I said, it was originally about the close bond of freindship.
There's no law that says a person has to have a date for valentines, that's just the social norm. EVERYONE, and most cultures, celebrate/s it different. In Japan, on Valentines Day, the girls give their friends, guys they like, and guy friends a gift. And then on March 14, White Day, it's the boys turn. And alot of it is about freindship, showing the peopel you like and care about, how you appreciate them. So there's no LAW about how a person should spend their time. When you get down to it. April 14 is just a day of the week, like any other.
Being single isn't all bad. ^_^ it definetly saves you some money. Or at least in my case, when I finally isolated myself from my ex, it did. But he was a cheating gold digger.
I'm not sure why getting a date is out of the question. I don't know the whole situation. But if it's like mine, then I can understand.
In my case, I was duped by a jerk. The whole 2 years, of off and on dating him, he cheated on me with his ex, who was a stripper *not anymore i don't think*, my ex best friend *who cheated on her bf all the time*, some girl he met on HotorNot, and a chick he worked with. He didn't even bother trying to hide it, so it was obvious. But still there was part of me that didn't want to beleive it. When I ended things, I was VERY bitter. Especially on Valentine's Day. Every Valentine's Day after that, I would remember how he dumped me the day before, after I'd bought him a gift. I'm finally starting to heal, and though I'm no longer single, my heart still goes out to you, as I have also been there.

Make dinner, rent a comedy (girly comedy like Mean Girls or John Tucker Must die) and invite some other single girls over.....do facials, pedicures...basically have a 12 year old's sleepover....maybe do some prank calls on ex-boyfriends...have fun with it!!!!!

go shopping and buy yourself a cute new outfit or something. Do something that YOU like to do. Treat it like a day thats made just for you. I agree I hate Valentines Day. Even when I had a boyfriend. I think its pointless
