Coccidia (coccidiosis) is a small protozoan that multiply in the intestinal tracts of dogs and cats. It usually only seen though in dogs and cats under the age of 6 months or older dogs and cats that have a low immune system. An older dog usually isn't affected by this coccidia because the immune system builds "fighting power" against it, immunity. In fact, an older dog can carry it in the intestines however never get ill from it. Your neighbors puppy could have therefore gotten this from the mother's feces (poop). Since the mother had it in the intestines, then the mother can be a carrier (although not get ill) and the puppy got it from the poop however has not built up the immunity to fight it off. It is much like a baby being more likely to getting a cold, while an adult in the same situation will not. The neighbors dog could have gotten it from the place where the puppy was adopted (such as a sheltor, a bad breeder, animal hospitals, and etc.) Exposure to coccidia will show results in around 13 days.
The symptoms of this is mainly diarrhea (rather running stools) and can contain mucous or blood. Coccidiosis is very contagious, especially among young puppies. Therefore, don't let your dog near the puppy at all - not even on the same ground when the infected puppy isn't there anymore. Nothing should be shared from the two dogs. In addition, flies and cockroaches can carry this disease from animal to animal - so it is dangerous! You can not get it as a human though. The only way to get rid of this protozoan is disposal of the feces(poop), and steam cleaning, setting things in boiling water, or a 10% ammonia solution. It can also stay alive in freezing weather, so setting something outside will not work. The puppy can be cured however only by a vet's help. If I were you, I would take a sample of my dogs feces (poop) to the vet to get tested for coccidia just to make sure. Dogs that don't show signs can still have it and can die if not taken care of properly. The test is usually very cheap and you don't have to take the dog in for an appointment. It is best to know in my opinion. Good Luck! Hope this has helped out.

Coccidia virus is usually (not always, though) associated with "puppy mills". The filthy conditions of these mills can cause coccidia. The virus is passed through infected food or water dishes – from feces. The virus drains the body of fluids and kills cells.

Coxidia/coccidia is an organism that lives in the intestines and causes lots of nasty symptoms. With proper meds and a bland diet the dog should be ok but it takes time to completely rid a dog of the organism.

Coccidia is not a virus. It is a parasite..a one celled parasite.

It isn't hard to get rid of. The dog will simply be given medication to kill the parasite. It's the same idea as deworming.

It is coccidiosis and it is a parasite from chickens. It causes severe diarrhea in the animal and is hard to treat and spreads readily in the feces. If you have a dog keep him away from the dog and the yard.
