They are fine. The chances of the cream cheese or the butter having anything wrong with them is very low. They would have to be contaminated when you bought them, and that's highly unlikely unless you buy that kind of thing fresh off the farm! Most foods these days are very safe, especially anything that's been pasteurized (such as dairy products) or processed (pre-cooked or boiled and canned). It's the hygiene practices of the people handling food, either at store or restaurant level that cause most foodborne illness. By the way, Staph is on everybody, all the time. It's what causes a scratch to turn red on your skin. We can't get away from it, all we can do is practice good hand-washing. Having worked in Food Service for many years and been continuously trained and refreshed in Safe Food Handling by the Department of Health, I would feel confident in eating your cupcakes, and usually leave mine out too. There is a safe food zone, but it doesn't necessarily apply to ALL foods. Baked goods, while they don't last as long, can stay out at least overnight. I don't refrigerate my cookies, or cakes, or brownies, and I'd be surprised if many people did.

RE:
Left cupcakes with real cream cheese frosting out all night. Are they still good?
Last night I made cupcakes and icing from scratch. The icing was made with 8oz of cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar. After I frosted the cupcakes, I forgot to put them in the fridge and they stayed out all night.
Are they okay to eat still, or is the icing no good? They are for a...

Sure. Cream cheese is used to make cheesecake and often cheesecake is topped with strawberries. I really can't think of a flavor of cake that a good cream cheese frosting would not taste good on.

yup -- milk products have increased longevity from sugar
and they tell you by smell and taste when there is a problem. If they taste fine - its a safe bet that they are fine. Often people leave butter out for days, and cream cheese overnight to soften. It isn't uncommon to not refridgerate frosted cupcakes for a night.

I suspect you're risking it if you serve them unless the room temperature was quite low. If it were me, I would make new ones.
STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS
Disease: Staph
Source: Carried by people on skin, in boils, pimples, and throat infections; spread when carriers handle food. Staph bacteria produce toxins (poisons) at warm temperatures. Meat, poultry, salads, cheese, eggs, custards, and cream-filled desserts are susceptible foods.
Symptoms (after eating): Onset: 1-8 hours; vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramps lasting 1-2 days. Rarely fatal.
Prevention: Cooking won't destroy staph poison, so practice good personal hygiene and sanitary food handling. Don't leave perishable food unrefrigerated over 2 hours. For quick cooling, place hot food in small containers no more than 4 inches deep; cover when cool and refrigerate.

They will be fine. I rarely refidgerate butter at my house. I like it soft enought to spread and I use it faster than it will spoil. Cream cheese like all cheese takes a long time to spoil.
