Not all dogs are made for fetching.

Your dog is a Yorkie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yorkie is not a retriever, that dog can't even retrieve air!

Some dogs don't fetch. You throw the ball, they watch. You go get the ball, they watch. You throw the ball again, they go lay under a tree and take a nap.

Now, if you can get your dog to fetch, here's how I would try. I would start by getting three or four balls to play with at once. You toss the ball... not too far, just a few feet to start with, the dog goes and picks up the ball. Then you pick up one of the other balls, get the dogs attention, and act like the new ball is the coolest thing in the world. once he comes up to you, toss that ball. At some point he is going to have to drop ball A in order to get ball B. This is why you want to not throw the balls too far away, because to start with, you will have to retrieve a few of them yourself. Once he gets the idea that you are going to throw another ball, try to get the first one back before throwing the next one. Build up distance slowly, and try to end the game while he's still interested, that way he doesn't get bored and quit on ya. It will keep him interested in the game when you play it again.

Sounds like your dog isn't so dumb after all; he's taught you to fetch! LOL! Try first making certain that his "come" skills are down... does he come when you call him? (right away! and happily) reward him for doing that first, and when he gets that down, then start to play with the stick/ball or whatever you choose to use... let it come gradually... my dog was hit with a ball, hard, and had to overcome that fear before playing again... be patient, a dog is about like an eternal 3yr old, with the exception of the tremendous physical agility!

I am trying to get my boxer to fetch, he almost has it down, sometimes he brings it back other times he just forgets about it. But I too have a cat that fetches. He actually brings it back, drops it at your feet and meows. I think he's trying to show the dog up.

Maybe your dog is not a retriever type. Any way you can get him to fetch using treats as bribes and try to get him to understand if he brings back the item then it is treat time.

Have you tried to reward the pet first with a treat? Then throw the ball away from him and tell him or her to bring you the ball or object. It takes time, Rome was not built in a day. Play with the pet. Do not make it a job.

Throw the stick, run over there and he will follow, then pick up the stick and put it in his mouth, then run back to the place you threw the stick from.

Do this about 500 times, and eventually he will do it on his own.

try throwing the stick. also, your dog isn't "dumb". think about it. why should he go to the effort when you'll do it for him? he's playing fetch with you. lol.
