I was told once that the Nat.Guard was originally formed as a state militia to protect the people from their own govt. If they are now under federal command, who protects us from a govt.gone bad? which really doesn't seem that far away sometimes.

whoa! 1st timer shock here. I guess I was looking for references to answers so I could search out a real answer. Is that silly of me? what I wasn't looking for was to be accused of serving the terrorist organizations after serving my country for 8 yrs.myself. Hey God Bless America, but what would our founding Fathers think of our Government?

The national guard is formed in a state but they are always under the Federal government, no matter who pays them. Yes, they are paid by each state unless the Federal government calls them to active duty, as is now the case. Once activated, the Federal government pays them.
When they were 1st formed it was to protect the state from the Federal government taking over. Those days have long gone. We now are all under the Federal Government to a certain extent.

The Army National Guard is under state and federal. The National Guard is not and never was to protect people from their own government. The NG was America's orginal Army. You should join, and serve you country and community.

Normally the National Guard is used by the individual states. However, the Guard can be Federalized at the president's discretion. The Guard was used extensively to enforce Federal Law many times since it's inception and, more recently, have (unfortunately) been used as cannon fodder on the battlefields of Iraq.

The National Guard is a state controlled body and is usually funded by the state. However, the federal government can take control of them and then are required to fund them. The state governor has to agree to the feds taking over but can be coerced in several ways, not least by the fact he no longer has to pay them.

They are trained and paid by the Federal Government. They are under the command of a State's Governor for the most part, but are still subject to the will of the Federal Government.

Less caffeine and read more!
First...YOU correct the problem of "bad government" through the voting process. For the government to go bad....keep supporting your international terrorist groups and maybe that day will come!
Second...the Federal government STILL has an obligation to insure the interests of the Nation within our borders!
In other words....your state militia is still working hard for YOU!
