I am loking into adopting a puppy... it ais a 5-6 week old chihuahua mix, right now it is a pound and a half. I'm just worried about it being a lot bigger than my cat. Is this usual size for a small chihuahua mix? I'm hoping for somewhere between 5-8 lbs.

Not truly possible to say for sure. Chihuahuas (according to the AKC breed standard) are not to exceed 6 pounds in weight at fully developed adulthood. However, I've seen Chihuahuas well over that weight due to less than ideal genetics/breeding/ etc. It also depends on what the pup is mixed WITH. If it's another toy breed, you should be safe. However, I've seen Chihuahuas mixed with some larger breeds and the pups exceed 15 pounds!

Being as the dog is a mutt it would be almost impossible to say how big it will be. Look at the sizes of the parents and then you will know what the size is. ie, if a 70 pound labrador and a 65 pound poodle mated the pups would be around 60-65 pounds and about 22-26 inches tall at shoulder. If any thing else was in the mix it would be impossible to tell. As long as you Love her don't worry about it.

Hmmm. Chihuahua mixed with what!? that's the question! A good indicator would be the feet... just like when we're in our last major developmental stage (for young boys, about 13-ish) our feet grew first... yeah, I remember having size 11.5 feet and being about 5' tall! I eventually grew another half shoe size, but another foot in height too (Thank God!). The pup can't be too big, if it's a Chihuahua mix though... but there's toy and standard... but I'd think about 8lbs max... give him/her plenty of exersize (walking keeps the dog happy & respectful, and keeps us in relatively decent shape as well!).
Good luck!

well the first question I would have is what is it mixed with?
I would say if the feet are very small and looking like the mother's feet it will be small...look at the other pups and compare the size of the feet.. pick the one with the smallest feet and resembling the mother mostly. That's the best I can do with the information given.

The pet store or breeder will know that information, usually they have the parents on site and you can see the size of the parents. When is a mix is really challenge to say.

Then you will be happy to know that a pure breed chihuahua will only grow to a maximum of 6 punds if he a true pure breed!
Best of luck to you!

it depends on how big the parents are. however, if it isonly 1lb or so right now and already 8 weeks, I doubt it will get much bigger than about 5-7lbs when full grown

Look at the knuckles ( Knees ) on its front legs. If they are large then it will be a larger adult. If the knuckles are small & blend in well with the rest of its leg, it will be small.
