Yes, prayer definitely works. But you should be careful what you ask for. There's a verse that goes, "He granted them their request, but sent leanness into their soul". I think if you passionately ask God for something that is not good or good for you, He may possibly grant it to you.
Like the song says, "Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers".

Prayer works kinda like a loan application. Be careful who you send it to, because that will determine who you now owe.

Yes, and I would try it if I was in your shoes. Start off asking for something small and believe he will do it. If it happens then tell us about it.

It depnds what you think prayer is for?

Is it a magic genie where you get all your wishes granted? Or is it a way to communicate with God and establish a relationship?

No.
However, if it helps you contemplate an issue, and therefore come to a conclusion, then it's probably a good thing.
If, on the other hand, you are simply hoping that some higher being will step in and alter the world so that it reflects your personal desires.....then no, it just doesn't work.
Sorry.

I will believe that prayers really work when an amputee prays for a new limb and it happens.
