Depending on your state. The penalty can range from a small fine and a summons to provide proof of insurance at a court hearing. To impoundment of your vehicle until proof of insurance is presented. Understand that if your vehicle is impounded you will have to pay impound and towing fees after showing proof of insurance in order to get your car back. This can be very, very expensive.

In California, you get a fix it ticket. You have to go to the court house, show them your proof of insurance and pay a $10 dollar ticket. If you didn't have insurance at the time you were stopped by the police then you pay a MUCH larger fine.

Depends on your state. If you have car insurance and just "misplaced" your proof, most states allow you to provide proof at time of your court date on your ticket.

If you don't have insurance, expect a nice suspension and fines.

Usually a tickett. Here in Mississippi you take the proof to pay your fine and they drop it. In some states they can go as far as to impound your car. Better check your state laws.
