okay, so people way that in order for your hair to grow longer, you have to get it trimmed regulerly. but what does that have to do with it? your hair grows from the roots, not the ends.
i do get mine trimmed b/c i don't want it to look nasty, but does it have anything to do with it growing longer?

It stops the split ends from moving up and damaging the rest of your hair. Damaged hair takes ALOT longer to grow.

It is true your hair does grow from the scalp out however, as your hair gets longer the ends become damaged (harsh shampoo can dry the ends, using blow dryers & irons causing the end to get thin and break. Giving the appearance of hair not getting longer because it is breaking off. Repeated brushing and combing also causes the hair to break. It's the nasty ends that you keep trimmed that make the hair seem like it's not growing.

Ok - this is how it works: If your hair isn't trimmed regularly, the hair will be more brittle and more likely to split toward the ends, and will tend to break off easily. Thus, you lose whatever you have gained by its growth. If, on the other hand, your hair is trimmed of its split ends regular, more hair stays attached to each strand, and your overall hair is longer. It won't speed up hair growth - just help you retain what you have already grown.

Trimming doesn't make your hair grow longer. It takes off the damaged ends to stop the breakage. The theory is that is you trim it regularly then your hair will break less.

Yes. In a sense. It gets rid of split ends which can spread up the hair shaft and ruin the newer hair. Also it improves the overall health of your hair because the tip is the weakest and most vulnerable because it is the oldest part of your hair. Also it is lacking the natural oils the rest of the hair recieves from the follicle.

Because split ends tend to travel up to the root, if you don't cut them off, they will split your hair and cause your hair more damage.
