there is a adoption fee

A few shelters, mostly small, municipal open-intake facilities in rural areas adopt out animals for free. IMO, this is a very bad practice as these animals have received no medical care. Also there are some scumbags out there who equate free with worthless and will get an animal, but won't give the it the care it deserves or will dump it somewhere as soon as they're tired of it.
An adoption fee, even a just a small one, at least weeds out some of the deadbeats.

I only paid $25 at a city pound when I adopted my puppy a few weeks ago, but I also had to take him to be neutered and pay for that separately. He also needed to be treated for worms, tested for heartworms and needed a rabies shot, so the grand total was much, much more than $25, but he's worth it. =)

My other dog came from a different shelter and cost $75 to adopt, but he already had all his vetting done.

Most shelters charge some kind of an adoption fee, but it is usually pretty low - between $30-$100 depending on the animal and the shelter. Lots cheaper than what breeders charge, you are saving a life and you'll usually get some assistance and background from the shelter plus often the vaccinations will be up-to-date and the animal will be spayed or neutered. Not a bad deal.

There is usually an adoption fee, which mostly covers the vaccines. It can be a bit more if you get the animal fixed too. I wouldn't think it could be more thatn $70 with the whole package. Shelters are good though because most of the time you are saving the animals life.

The animal is free. You make a donation for it though. The fees for spay/neutering and immunizations can vary. There is also a big price difference for Humane Society (which is usually higher) and local pounds. I just adopted a puppy from my local humane society and I paid a total of $307.00. That included all shots, neutering, physical exam, and a puppy training class. I will get a refund of $69.00 after attending three training classes. That may seem like a lot of money, but try asking people how much a puppy from a breeder or store costs them in vet fees alone.

It is almost always lower in cost than getting an animal "free" from elsewhere or even paying the price at a pet store. And you get a lot of services that are more expensive on the "open" vet market, shots, worming, veterinary exam or treatment, spaying and neutering.

Your local taxes also go to support the work of the shelter which includes responding to reports of animal abuse or neglect, helping owners find lost pets, educational programs, etc. So in that sense you are getting a return on your taxes, making your community a better place for all homeless and distressed animals.

Free? I'm not sure I get what you're saying. There is always an adoption fee to help cover the cost of vaccines, spaying or neutering.
Free? Yes, now the animal is free to live a "normal" life with a loving family, instead of "living" in a small cage until someone decides to euthanize it, because no one wants it.

No-it probably would be if the shelter didn't need the money-which they do. There's also the money for many reasons. Dogs are usually somewhere between 75-250$ depending on their age, breed, size, and behavier. Cats are usually 50-150$ from what I've seen, and the smaller animals vary. They are a lot of money the animals, but it's definatly worth it. If I were you I'd get a dog or cat, I love dogs and cats because they understand you. i've never had a cat but I have a really friendly dog. But, cats can be easier to take care of. Good luck!

No of course not, when you adopt a kid is it free? no. It's the same for an animal you have to pay for the medical care, such as shots and spaying/neutering when you go to adopt it. How else would shelters be able to stay open and pay for medical care for the animals

No because most of the time there is an adoption fee, but shelter dogs are wonderful dogs. I have 2.

Most want an adoption fee to 1) cover some of the cost of vaccines and spaying and 2) to make sure the new pet parent is serious
