Etiquette - social behaviour... Anywho - I only asked this because I thought it was odd that they only want bread and milk. Why not potatoes, pasta or rice. A friend recently told me her husband panic buys tinned soup lol. I live alone and if I was snowed in for a week I'd have enough to survive that and beyond and at a push make a loaf if I was desperate. My question was only meant to be light hearted. The answers have been excellent so far.

It may be just a safe measure to avoid going out in a blizzard for staples, but most people are hopelessly negative. They are absolutely obsessed with traumas and disappointments. Bad feels good, to them.

If people were a little more reliant upon faith, the thought of disasters or inconveniences in life would seem minor. If they bought an extra loaf of bread before a storm, that would only last them an extra couple of days...not eternity.

You must live in my community. The weather man can just mention snow and the bread & milk shelves go blank ! And the thing is, we hardly ever get over a inch or two. That's been my question for a long time now, so, I don't know how to answer.

I used to live out in the middle of nowhere and when we would get snow we would be stuck up on the hill for days, sometimes more than a week. So we would stock up on water, milk, bread, canned goods, and candles just in case.

If you have ever been hit by a blizzard then you would know that nothing moves. Not only is it difficult to get out of your own house but delivery trucks cannot get to the stores either. So people stock up in order to be sure that they will have the necessities until traffic can start to flow once more.

Those are perishible items. If you can't get back to the store for a week, all the canned goods in the cupboard will still be OK, but milk and bread need to be bought "fresh".

Because typically bread and milk are the first to go in a family household...especially if you have kids. Kids eat lots of cereal and make lots of sandwiches.

No matter how much shopping you do...bread and milk will have to be replenished before your next big grocery shopping trip.

They panic for no reason. They think that is will snow 100 inches an hour and they may be trapped inside their houses for weeks.
