I have 2 maltese/pug cross pups - they are almost 5 months old. They are brother and sister. In the last week they have started to hump each other (the boy humps the girl, however she also does it to him too) and my wife is very worried that this is not a good thing. Is it too early to have them desexed?

They're right about at that age where spaying/neutering is a good idea. Chances are, though, that this behavior has nothing to do with sexual reproduction at all. Humping is a sign of dominance for dogs. A dog will hump another dog to show that he/she is the dominant dog (the "alpha dog"). Your pups are most likely trying to establish roles in the "pack" and figure out who is the more submissive dog in your household.
(But, as was mentioned before, since the adulthood stage is coming up, you may want to see your vet soon before you get puppies from your puppies!)

You can have them spayed and neutered now, some vets recommend waiting until 6 mos other will do it earlier. The humping will probably continue after they've been 'desexed' humping is often about dominance, and has nothing to do with sex.

Honey if he keeps humping her he may impregnate her later on. and when the puppies come out they will be inbreed which in animals is not good. The puppies will most likely die. I don't know about desexing them ask your vet. Man I feel bad for them already!

Well if the girl comes into heat the male will hump her and maybe impregnate her. Talk to your veterinarian about this problem and they can probably do one or the other right away.

dogs will hump anything they can get their chest onto. legs, sofas, etc. once, a neighbour's king charles spaniel humped my young sister's snoopy pyjama case. how we laughed uproariously when, minutes later, she unzipped it & produced her (much smaller) snoopy beanbag she had stashed inside earlier before the humping incident. lol. the spaniel sat there blissfully ignorant as to our hilarity & congratulations to the "proud father" lol.
