It can't be about having a baby since a good percentage of couples can't have babies no matter how much they screw.
And in the old days, they use tongue and groove to make cradles, no nails then.
However, if you leave off "old" and just ask "A proverb says...", the answer would be sex when the woman's temperature is just right.

Man, Sprinting has taken this too far. I think it's very funny, so, thank you for sharing that. Also, it's good advice to practice safe sex, because, you never know, it could take just one screw.
