Usually younger people get or give a promise ring. They aren't ready to get married yet, but they intend to someday to that person.

RE:
Promise ring versus engagement ring?
What do you think the difference is behind the meaning. Why would someone give a promise ring if they say they want to marry you and that you are the only one for them?

I saw it a lot in high school. For adults, I haven't seen it that much in serious relationships. If he is planning on getting you a promise ring, he could apply that towards an actual engagement ring. Or, the "promise" ring could be your engagement ring.

I would say that a promise ring means that, while marriage is in the future, the person giving it probably isn't ready for marriage anytime soon. Its a good sign to know that the person giving thinks about the future and marriage, but it's not in the cards just yet. An engagement ring signifies that the person giving it (and the person accepting it) are ready for marriage. Whether they have a six-month engagement or a five-year engagement, at least the process is in motion, and the planning process will begin shortly thereafter.

Im not with that whole promise ring thing. It youre not ready then youre not ready...If someone is giving me a "Promise Ring" then it might as well be an engagment ring because youre either ready to get married or youre not. Making a promise that you dont know if you are going to be able to fulfill in a few years isnt good enough. I just dont see the logic or point in it. If we are dating and you give me a ring, then we better be getting married in the next year or so, lol. I dont want to hear that this is my "word" to you or my "promise" to you that we will get married on day! If thats the case then dont give me anything until you are ready to be engaged.

Promise rings are usually given when you are in your teens, that usually means that you both promise to be with one another, then there is the engagement rings in which means marriage, the real big difference between them is Carets, Engaement rings are far more expensive then promise rings.

To me a promise ring is something you do when you are still young like in high school or something. Then when you are older is more like a engagement thing because you know for a fact that you are wanting to be with that person foever!

My now husband gave me a promise ring when we were 18 and I was leaving for college. There was no way we were ready to be engaged, we were way to young, but we both intended to be married someday. And we are!
ETA:I think, from reading peoples reactions to them, that I am one of the few promise ring success stories.
