Pie and mash is an English colloquialism for any type of savory pie and mashed potatoes. Typical pies might be beef pie, cottage pie or something like that. This was a quintessential working class meal up to the 1960's.
For the beef pie, just cook up a beef casserole with maybe some mushrooms and carrots and then place that in a pie dish (removing some of the gravy, so it isn't too slushy). Cover with puff pastry and bake until the pastry has risen.
I hope I don't have to explain how to make mashed potatoes!

Get a meat pie and make some mashed potatoes putting some milk, butter and ground pepper when mashing. Now for the important bit. get a tin of mushy peas and drain the liquid of them. This liquid is called liquer and should be poured over the pie and mash in quantity.

Hi,
You got me curious as I didn't know either - I googled it and this is what I found (sites in order below)
Pie and Mash with parsley liquor A very traditional East End London meal.
The original pies were made with eels because at the time eels were a cheaper product than beef. About fifty years ago, mince beef pies replaced the eels and have now become the traditional pie and mash that people know.
The traditional pie and mash doesn't come without its famous sauce known as liquor which is a curious shade of green and definitely non-alcoholic. The liquor tastes much nicer than it looks (it's bright green!).
Jellied eels are also an East End delicacy often sold with pie and mash
Posh pie and mash
Categories: Can't Stand The Heat
Yield: 1 servings
1 large Onion; skinned and diced
4 ounce Mushrooms; wiped
2 Sticks celery
2 medium Sized carrots
1 Sprig thyme
1 medium Sized beef fillet
½ pint Stock
Parsley
4 Oysters
4 Sheets puff pastry
Garlic oil
4 large Potatoes
1 large Onion
Butter or garlic oil
2 Jellied eels and eel jelly
Potato water
Parsley
PIE MASH SAUCE Heat a little of the garlic oil in a pan. Finely chop the vegetables and stir fry in the oil. Dice three quarters of the beef fillet, slice the remainder into thin strips and reserve. Add the diced meat to the vegetables, add thyme and a little of the parsley, pour in the beef stock and reduce. Fry the remaining strips of beef in a little garlic oil. Boil the potatoes in lightly salted water. When soft, drain and reserve the water. Mash potatoes by hand or with a mixer, adding butter to taste. Caramelise a thinly sliced onion in butter and stir into the mashed potato. Line each individual pie tin with a sheet of puff pastry and partially fill with the vegetable and meat mixture. Add a couple of the beef strips and an oyster, then another layer of the pie filling. Brush the rim of the pie with egg and add a sheet of puff pastry for the lid. Trim the edges and decorate, brush the top lightly with egg. Cook the pies in a very hot oven for about 10 minutes. Stir the eel jelly into the potato water, add remaining parsley, heat and reduce. Serve the pies, with mash, top with a jellied eel and a serving of the sauce.
Bon Apetit

It is a very complicated recipe but i will have a go.
First buy your pie, (Chicken and mushroom, Steak and kidney) the choice is yours, or you could make your own pie but that's just complicating things,
Then you boil your potatoes and mash them, alternatively you can by packet mash and make that, serve on a plate with gravey or a sauce of your own choice ENJOY.
What did you think pie and mash consists of..................
