I am currently on my paretns insurance and will be getting my own insurance once I buy a car. I am taking a defensive driving course at the end of the month which will qualify me for a discount on my insurance premiums.

If I get insurance before I take the course, will I be able to get eth discount once I have taken the course, or do I have to wait until I purchase my next 6 months of insurance?

With my company, they will start the discount once they are made aware of the completed class and have documented proof. From that time, the discount will be pro-rated for the remainder of the policy period. It may take an additional month for the discount to appear on the billing, but you will receive the pro-rated discount for the remainder of the policy period from the time of notification.

Let me clear something up...not ALL insurance companies offer discounts for completing a defensive driving course!!!!! This is a common misconception about insurance.

Before you even go and take that course, call (or have your parents call) the insurance company you are with and make sure they even offer this discount. It would be a waste of your time and money if you complete the course only to find that your company doesn't offer a discount for completing such a course.

If they do offer the discount, they will likely apply it at your next renewal. But again, that also varies among companies. Best thing for you to do is call your agent and ask him/her! They would know better than anybody on here!!!
