I have just had my timing belt renewed on my 1.8 ford focus at 63000 miles (T reg) at a ford garage and they also renewed the tensioner. However they did not renew the tensioner pulley and I wonder if they've done the right thing

hello... i am a ford master technician... the answer to your question is .... on that engine as on all zetec petrol engines the timing belt interval is 10 years or 100000 miles so u didn't really need it changed unless they had a reason to remove it like head gasket repair etc. the tensionor and the tensionor pulley are one item with the tension being achieved by the use of an accentric cam within the pulley. the only other item you may consider replacing along with the belt are the idler pulleys but only if they are cracked or worn in any way, but certainly not at the mileage on your vehicle.. i wouldnt beat yourself up to much as u now have peace of mind for the next ten years......

Give them a call, Replacing the Timing Belt is a hard job to do and needs to be done correctly by a skilled technician, you were correct to get this work done as Zetecs need this doing after 60k miles.
Also to note foucs zetecs need the oil checked and changed regulary they can be thirsty on it, making sure its the decent stuff.

The tensioner pulley is normal integral with the tensioner. Again.

As long as the pully is freely spinning and does not wiggle when the belt is not on it, then it is ok to use the old pulley. If it is hard to spin or if it wiggles, then the berrings in the pully are going out and it needs to be replaced. you can go to an auto zone and they would probly check it out for free for you. Hope this eases your mind.

As long as the bearings in the pulley are ok there's no real need to change it.It's not all that hard to change if you need to later.
