She doesn't need company as long as you're giving her lots of love and attention daily, but birds are very social and flock oriented animals. If your male died young (I'd say less than 8-10 years old is pretty young), take his body for a necropsy, just to be safe that he died of causes within his body and not causes that are within your household, the cage, and could have been passed to the female, and get your female to an avian vet for a well-bird check as well.

If you do get another, I don't think females are aggressive with each other as long as they have the space to get away from one another, so a big cage is a must. I would wait before integrating in this new bird, because birds do mourn the loss of a buddy. Besides, in this time, you'll want to quarantine the new bird in a separate cage in a separate room for 30 days and once you get a well-bird check on that bird, and both the new and old bird have come back with clean bills of health, you can introduce them to the same room. I wouldn't cage them together right away. Try moving the cages closer together day by day and let them interact out of the cage first. Not only is this easier as a transition, but it gives you an idea of how they'll act with each other in the cage. If they fight, you won't want to cage them together unsupervised because by ignoring their fighting, you could end up with another dead budgie and another seriously injured one.

The reason why people purchase one of each sex is to breed them. Parakeets alone make a better pet. They become people oriented rather than bird oriented. Now that the male is gone you need to watch her behavior. Spend a lot of time talking with her and playing with her. If she becomes quiet and seems not be healthy have her check out by a vet. You didn't say why the male died, was he ill? If she also seems not well perhaps she is also unhealthy now?

Parakeets need companionship. Two females are okay together, but it isn't a good idea to keep two males together- so you should be fine. But yeah, she'll be lonely. They are healthier with companions, just like they would be in the wild. ;)

Well she was used to having a friend so she might get lonely. It can be a male or female that you get - it doesn't matter.
