When one plays with their buddies in the garage or the basement, I understnad that you play against your oppents and you take their money, but when one plays poker in Vegas, are they playing against the house or the other players?

There are three basic kinds of poker in Vegas.

Ring / Cash games. This is much like you play with your buddies. You play for cash against each other. The blinds vary from $1/$2 right on up. Maybe $2/$4 and up for limit poker.

The only difference between your home game and a casino game is that a dealer is present to deal out the cards. He will take a small percentage of every pot known as a rake. This is the casino's take. But they do not have any interest in who wins. It is also customary to tip (aka toke) the dealer a small amount if you win a nice pot.

The second kind of poker is tournament poker. You buy in for a fee. Part of that fee is given to the casino for hosting a tournament. You are given some tournament chips that have no cash value, and you keep playing until someone has them all. The place you get knocked out in determines how much of the prize pool you win. Tournaments run several times a day at most casinos, with buy in amounts starting at $50. Again, the casino has no interest in who wins.

The third kind of poker is not really poker at all. There are a series of table games such as Pai Gow, Three Card Poker, Let It Ride, Texas Hold'em (table game), World Poker Tour, Caribbean Stud and many more. These are table games loosely based on poker where the object is to beat the dealer to get paid. Think of it more like black jack with semi-poker rules. The popularity of poker has spawned all kinds of poker based table games, each with a fairly simple set of rules. If you understand the rank of poker hands, you can soon figure it out. All of these table games there is a built in house edge which is different from one game to the next. But make no mistake, there is always a house edge in this kind of game.

If you are playing texas holdem poker then you are playing against other players at the table just like playing with your buddies in the garage! The dealer is just that the dealer although at certain points in the game you will be asked to pay a certain rake.

If you are playing caribbean stud poker or pai gow you are playing against the dealer!

I hope this helps.

You play against the other players but the house takes out the rake ( a percentage of money in play). That is how they make their cut.
